Italy (Sicilia)

Siracusa

In October 2002, we flew from Rome to the Catania airport, then we drove down the coast to Siracusa.  We stayed on Ortiga Island at the convent, Albergo Domus Mariae.   We stayed here for several days and commuted daily to the Archeological and tourist sites on the East coast.

This was our first visit to Sicily.  We found it beautiful and educational.  Sicily has lived under a number of flags through the ages, and every one of them has affected the local culture.  This is also reflected in the many examples of Baroque architecture.

Although it is not easy to get to from North America, it is well worth the additional connections.
